Curriculum
Total Duration: 2 Hours
Kickoff: Why Design Thinking Matters for Managers

  • Innovation as a leadership responsibility
  • Moving from problem-solving to problem-framing
  • Real-world examples of design thinking transforming organizations

Understanding Design Thinking

  • The 5 stages: Empathize → Define → Ideate → Prototype → Test
  • Core principles: Human-centered, iterative, collaborative, experimental
  • The manager’s role in enabling design-led culture

Stage 1: Empathize - Understanding Stakeholders

  • Tools: Interviews, observations, empathy maps
  • Going beyond surface symptoms to uncover real needs
  • Active listening and curiosity in leadership

Stage 2: Define - Framing the Right Problem

  • Turning insights into actionable problem statements
  • “How Might We” (HMW) framing
  • Avoiding the trap of jumping to solutions

Stage 3: Ideate - Generating Creative Options

  • Divergent vs. convergent thinking
  • Brainstorming techniques that spark creativity (e.g., SCAMPER, mind maps)
  • Encouraging psychological safety for bold ideas

Stage 4: Prototype - Bringing Ideas to Life

  • Low-fidelity vs. high-fidelity prototypes
  • Storyboards, mock-ups, and process maps
  • Testing concepts quickly without overbuilding

Stage 5: Test - Learning & Iteration

  • Gathering user or stakeholder feedback effectively
  • Interpreting results without attachment
  • Iterating toward improvement rather than perfection

Design Thinking in Team Management

  • Using design principles to improve meetings, onboarding, and workflows
  • Collaborative retrospectives and process design
  • Building empathy between functions (e.g., product ↔ ops ↔ sales)

Embedding Innovation Culture

  • Psychological safety and curiosity as team norms
  • Rewarding experimentation and learning
  • Creating small wins to build momentum

Design Thinking Toolkits for Managers

  • Empathy maps, journey maps, stakeholder grids
  • Ideation canvas and prioritization matrix
  • Rapid prototyping templates

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Breaking silos with shared problem ownership
  • Facilitating multi-perspective workshops
  • Managing conflict constructively during ideation
